What's blooming in the neighborhood?

Yep, my neighbor at the lake, Bill and Phyl, are enjoying their huge plantings of tulips as they begin to bloom!  So glad we are next door and we get to enjoy looking at them right outside our kitchen window!  Bill purchases them on sale each fall to add to their collection!

What's blooming in the neighborhood?

Have you taken a stroll around your neighborhood to see what's blooming?

You often have to look down to find the spring blossoms!  They are usually low to the ground.

What's blooming in the neighborhood?

I so look forward to these little blue lights blooming.  They have multiplied so well for me and I love them!  Have a few that have crept into the grass and that's OK with me!

What is blooming in the neighborhood?

A flashy spot of  yellow is lighting up the neighborhood across the street!
Jeanne's spring patch has some great looking daffodils!

Last update on Gus!

My AZ snowbirds have all left to go back home so this is the last batch of pictures of our famous "Gus"!

He is opening up but not fully there yet.  We'll check back in November to see what is going on with him then!

What's blooming in the neighborhood?

Spring color is brightening up the neighborhood for sure!  These always bring a smile to my face!

Red Headed Irishman!

I simply love my Red Headed Irishman cactus!

He is now a year old and is such a joy!  But, maybe all red headed Irishmen are a joy?   I have no experience with real ones!  Thinking I am missing out!

I purchased him in Mesa, AZ a year ago and have watched it bloom two seasons now and grow fast!

He has almost doubled in size so not sure how much larger it will grow as it is reaching near the mature size in the information I located on the internet!

He sure is easy to take care of, and lived without water for 6 weeks this winter while we were in AZ!  I just made sure it was near a window, for what I hoped would be adequate light!  It must have loved the cooler temp as it survived just fine and is now blooming again!

The Red-Headed Irishman Cactus or Mammillaria Spinosissima is native to Guerrero, Mexico. It forms clumps of columns, densely spines with reddish-orange spines. It forms magenta flowers in late  winter and spring, providing a startling contrast. Keep warmer in winter.

Grows up to ten inches tall. This unique plant is a terrific center focal point. Very drought tolerant!

Panel discussion on garden critters we don't want!

What a fun experience this last week!

At the recent meeting of our Shades of Green Hosta Society of SE MN we had a panel of members tackling various methods to deal with those pesky unwanted critters who visit our garden beds and do damage to our plants.

Denny and I sat on the panel.   The area we shared information and experiences with was on the subject of Voles!  I shared some interesting and humorous information on this critter and Denny shared how to use the trap we use in attempting to lower our population.  We have a herd of voles that have settled into living under a low deck right next to my mini hosta bed!  They have confined their damage to the roots of my mini hostas and dwarf perennials but we are trying to reduce the herd size or eliminate their dining.

We had quite a discussion on solutions to Deer repellent use as well as use of electric fencing!  Also, how to live with the deer when you have moved into their territory with your leaving space, as another option.

Denny and I are on the far right!

Garden Club Plant Sale coming up!

One of the  really fun gardening events I am involved in!

Our Rochester Garden & Flower Club annual Plant Sale to raise funds for our community projects!

Mid May we load up a huge building at our local fair grounds and usually sell about $12,000 in plants grown by our members in their gardens!  It is a time to meet and greet area gardeners and enjoy the fellowship of fellow garden club members!

Already members are growing plants and splitting perennials as they come to life this spring to prepare for our sale!

I'm sharing a favorite spring plant this year.  'Star of Bethlehem' peeks up early and blooms with lovely little white flowers in late April or early May!   It came to my garden from a friend's garden 12 years ago and it has spread a bit too much.   As it disappears after blooming it is great to settle in among plants that will grow over it later, such as hostas!

Another member has already started some English Cucumbers from seed for the sale!

Snow has melted and the grass isn't the only thing that is growing!

This is indeed an early spring!

Two weeks ahead of last year for this fun day!

My collection of fairy/miniature gardens and hosta containers are springing to life!  One afternoon of gardening in the garage was so fun!  The next day they were all treated to a day of sun bathing on our driveway!  Yes, they thanked me and enjoyed it!  Some of the hostas in pots are up several inches!

They were safely tucked inside before night came again to wait for another warmer sunny day!

Quite a few mini perennials need dividing soon!  Yipeeee!
